If there was ever a spiritual discipline that is lacking or quite misunderstood, I would say it is the discipline of regular ‘Fasting’. Fasting is as vital to your spiritual walk of faith than many other essentials, such as reading the Bible daily, prayer, worship and fellowship with the saints. If you are wanting to deepen your walk with God and grow more intimately with Jesus then fasting cannot be neglected nor something that only happens once a year.
“As soon as I heard these words I sat down and wept and mourned for days, and I CONTINUED fasting and praying before the God of heaven.”
Notice how the English Standard Version says it?
Nehemiah CONTINUED fasting which means he was already in a fast.
I believe that Nehemiah wept and mourned with a broken heart because fasting enabled him to feel the heart of God at this time (which was that the walls of Jerusalem were being destroyed).
A few things we can learn from this one verse:
1. Fasting needs to be a regular practice in the life of a believer.
2. Fasting will make you more sensitive to God and what was going on around you.
3. Fasting goes hand in hand with prayer.
4. When you begin to fear, fast.

Morning brother. Kan nie kla nie. We tend to see fasting as punishment or the last resort when things get difficult we forced to fast but hence it should be something that we do regularly, not just for ourselves but for others that is going through difficult situations. To stand in the gap. We must refrain from just fasting in order to receive something from God but to do it to be more sensitive to the word of God, draw closer to Him as you made mentioned of🙏🏾

      100% brother. Amen!

Primarily we must fast to get close to Jesus, yes.
Not use fasting as a form of ‘rubbing a genie’s bottle’.

It is from a place of fasting, drawing close to Him, that our hearts and minds are aligned to His will and thereby I believe He hears us. When we then ask according to His will we can be sure to receive what we ask for. Whether that is for others or even for a need of our own.

I have heard how so many have been disappointed by fasting and are now discouraged to fast again, but this is simply because the motivation can be misaligned.
